Cardiovascular disease (CHD) Cardiovascular disease is the medical term for heart attacks, angina, strokes and other diseases of the circulation. Current statistics show that one in three of use will die of heart disease. The increase in the prevalence of diabetes in middle and old age due to more people becoming obese is very worrying because it is an important risk factor in the development of CHD. Fortunately, many of us are becoming aware of the importance of diet, exercise and giving up smoking. Both men and women are affected, and for many people problems of the circulation tends to run in families. However, there are risk factors that can be identified and treated, both with changes in lifestyle, and sometimes medication.
It is very important that people who have had a heart attack or have other forms of ischaemic heart disease are being assessed regularly and are on the right medication for their condition. If you have been diagnosed with CHD you will automatically go onto our database and will be contacted to arrange an annual review appointment in the Heart Clinic. This is run by our nurses who are supervised by one of the doctors. In this clinic patients are given all the relevant tests they need and can discuss what they can do to reduce their risks. A full medication review is done. For people who smoke a referral to our STOP SMOKING CLINIC can be arranged. Useful links
